When I first saw the advert for Murcia Trike Tours, I knew right away it was something I had to experience. The idea of cruising through beautiful Spanish towns on a three-wheeled trike seemed like an adventure not to be missed. My only challenge? Convincing my husband Tom. He’s always been more of a four-wheel fan, preferring the comfort of cars over bikes—or in this case, trikes.
But then, the perfect opportunity presented itself. My sister and her husband were visiting us for a holiday in Spain, and with my sister’s birthday on the horizon, I decided to book the tour as a surprise birthday treat for her. The plan was for the four of us to embark on the adventure together. I kept the details from Tom until the night before, expecting a mix of excitement and reluctance, but to my surprise, he took the news quite calmly. It seemed the mystery of it intrigued him!
The Start of Our Adventure
The day of the tour, we met up with Stef and Will from Murcia Trike Tours by the 525 Hotel in Los Alcázares. Having previously shared our head sizes, we were all geared up with helmets that fit perfectly. It didn’t take long for the small talk to turn into lively conversation, and we quickly discovered an unexpected connection. Stef and her husband Steve, who also operates one of the trikes, were from our hometown of Coventry in the UK. To our amazement, we found out that Steve had actually been a close friend of Tom’s brother many years ago! Needless to say, there was plenty to chat about as we set off on our tour.
Exploring Murcia: The “Seldom Seen” Tour
We opted for the “Seldom Seen” tour, and it truly lived up to its name. This route took us through quaint local towns and villages, winding up into the mountains and eventually back down to Portmán Bay. Every so often, we’d stop for photos, capturing stunning landscapes and hidden gems.
What really impressed me was Stef and Will’s vast knowledge of the area. They gave us a fascinating history of Portmán Bay, an area once rich in minerals that suffered from ecological damage. I won’t spoil the details here in case you choose this tour yourself, but the story traces all the way back to Roman times, and it’s an ongoing tale of regeneration and environmental restoration. Our stop at Portmán Bay was a perfect chance for a quick coffee break before heading on to La Manga Club, which, surprisingly, is not located as I has always thought, on the famous La Manga strip but instead atop a steep hill with breathtaking views.
At every stop, Stef and Will shared insights and anecdotes that brought the region to life. It wasn’t just a scenic ride; it felt like a journey through Murcia’s rich history and culture.

Round Two: The “Highlights of Mar Menor” Tour
We loved the experience so much that when our son and his wife visited us a few months later, we jumped at the chance to book another trip—this time the “Highlights of Mar Menor” tour. This route took us to Lo Pagán and Santiago de la Ribera, where we visited at the salt flats and flamingos, and took refreshments by the marina filled with yachts. We then stopped at the famous mud baths for a photo opportunity where Steve shared on of his funny stories with us (no spoilers here), the trip provided our son and daughter-in-law with a great introduction to the area.
This time, our guides were Stef and Steve, and once again, their local knowledge and easygoing personalities made the trip an absolute joy. They pointed out spots we might want to revisit later and gave us plenty of ideas for the rest of the week.
