What’s that, the Torre del Rame?
The southern part of our town is called Las Lomas del Rame, or The Hills of Rame. It’s named after the small towered fortress Torre del Rame. When driving the N332 to or from southern LA, you’d probably never see it as there are some building and a lot of palm trees blocking the sight. I’m not propagating to cutting the palm trees down, instead I encourage you to take the small detour and have a look at the Torre.
LA council has seen the tourism potential of the Torre a few years ago when they (finally) cleared up the garden surrounding it and cleaned up the park. An information sign was put up and one of them frames to assist you with your Torre de Rame selfie was added for good measure.
This fortress was already mentioned in the 13th century and built in the 12th century. It is alleged to have been built during the Arabian occupation and later rebuilt as a place to protect the coast from pirate attacks.
Here are some pictures of the north and eastern side of the Torre:
A view from the park:
And from the eastern side:
And a view from the southern side (Av. Principe Felipe):
The location is: Av. Príncipe Felipe, 4A, 30710 Los Alcázares, Murcia
which makes it easily accessible from the Calle Infanta Elena. For a glimpse of the other side of the site, enter the Avenida Principe Felipe (the Serena Golf road) and after a hundred or so meters, you get a nice view from the southern side of the Torre via the driving range of the golf club.
I’d say the village of LA has a prime piece of tourist attraction sitting right there. Unfortunately, it is not signposted in any way from the N332 that only runs a hundred or so meters past it. While the park surrounding it is nowadays kept from weeds, you cannot get to the actual Torre as it is fenced in. Still worth a visit in my view.
Years ago I read somewhere that the site is open for the public so you can have a look inside and even on the tower. If that’s still the case, I sure would like to join one of those tours one day. Lemme know in the comments below if you know more of this!
So for LA council, I’d ask you to consider the following:
- Put up signposts on the N332
- Make the place more accessible
- Plan to do guided tours
Apparently, there was a series of this type of towers in our area. Little south in the direction of Cartagena, you can still see the well-preserved remnants of Torre del Negro that nowadays is part of a more modern and larger farm building.
